Final Product

Final Product After receiving feedback, I prolonged the text shown on screen when the interviewees are being asked questions, made the volume of all clips as equal as possible, focusing on voiceovers and lowered the volume of music on interviews.  Link to final product:

Evaluation of my project

Evaluation of my project Once  completing all stages of production, receiving feedback and editing my documentary, I am finally happy with my final project and all the researching that I put into it. My documentary titled ‘Musical Theatre in the North East’ acts as a homage to the theatre community, expressing how it is represented in the North East - told firsthand by those who experience it everyday. When reading the brief and becoming aware of it being about identity and culture, I knew straight away that I had to base my own project around musical theatre. This has been a huge aspect of my life for many years and is something that makes me feel like part of a community. I believe that documentaries have to be personal in some way, which is why I chose this topic. Although my original idea came to my quite quick, I then had to consider what the actual content would be when narrowed down - what was the purpose? What am I going to get out of this? As the brief is for the cli...

Post-production diary

Post-production diary Once wrapping up all things production, I am beginning to experiment with piecing it all together. As the interviews were the first shots I filmed, I will begin here. Although this will be the main body of the interview, I believe starting with the biggest chunk of footage will allow me to easily work around it and fill in any gaps. 5th May 2022 Today I imported the interviews that took place on the 7th April onto my laptop. As I am aiming to be working from home on this project, I decided to start editing on iMovie. This decision was not one I took lightly. Premier Pro is accessible to me through the college computers, yet I would only be able to work on this in class time, which is not ideal for me personally.  I have previously used iMovie on past projects, so although I will not be able to achieve more sophisticated edits, it is more efficient in the long term.  Once my footage was imported and dragged onto the timeline, I began cutting the cli...

First Draft of final product & feedback

Image
First Draft - Final Product & Feedback After completing the first edit of my final product, I aim to gather any feedback and make changes if needed to do so. Link to video:  Once exported and uploaded to YouTube, I shared it with my peers to obtain their views and any to hear any feedback they may have. As they are within the targeted age range, it is important to cater to what they want out of the documentary.  The overall feedback I received was: Good / interesting topic Interesting interviews Well researched Good layou t Suitable music choice  Edited well Good use of voiceovers and screen-recordings Make the text last longer on interviews (consistency) Fix audio levels so that they are equal (especially voiceovers) Lower music on interviews I am extremely pleased with the feedback that I received, due to it being only the first draft. Being open to changes is crucial when in the post-production stage, as there are always going to be ways to improve and m...

Production Diary

Image
Production Diary  Completing all pre-production that is possible to do before production means that I can now start to put my product into place. My first advance into production will be organising interviews. 24th March 2022 After coming up with suitable interview questions, I sent them to my lecturer who will then pass them onto people studying Musical Theatre. Being able to interview students at Sunderland College will be perfect as we can film on site and they are young performers in the North East, which is a main feature in my ideas. 6th April 2022 My first interviews have now been organised for 7th April, but I wanted to try and obtain some test footage first, to see what angles work / don't work, instead of leaving it to the day.  With the help of Lucy (production assistant) who sat in front of the camera so I could move the camera / focus etc. we found the perfect set up. I decided to just be a voice as the interviewer, with the interviewee in a talking head type set ...

Final Script & Progress

Image
Final Script & Progress Carrying out research on how to write a script was beneficial as I now know where to begin and how to lay it out. The final product:  Using Celtx  to write and store my script was extremely beneficial in keeping it organised and it aided in the layout, as you can add in characters, dialogue, actions etc. The script was, however, only completed once production was ended, due to the nature of the project. Since documentaries typically are not scripted, I could not have predicted the direction in which the interviews went, therefore this could only be fully finished once production was too.  Writing the introduction for my documentary was fairly easy to do. As I had reflected on other existing products and seen what types of codes and conventions (e.g statistics) were used there, I knew what I did and did not want to include in my own. Opening with statistics was something that I, as the audience, do find interesting, so I wanted to replic...

Focus Group (reflecting on Interview Questions)

Image
Focus Group Once completing all pre-production stages of my project, I decided to hold a focus group to reflect on my interview questions; whether these were appropriate, to gather audience feedback and see if they believed it would be beneficial to add or take away any of the questions I was planning. Being able to talk with my peers who are doing completely different topics is extremely refreshing and allows me to thoroughly visualise my audience. Through doing this focus group, I aim to:  -Collect feedback on my interview questions (Are they suitable? Are they worded correctly?) -Discover what they would hope to see in my project (after being shown my pitch and script) -Discover if my plans are fitting within the theme of Sunderland Culture  Link to focus group:  Questions asked:  -Do you think these questions are appropriate for a documentary on Musical Theatre in the North East? -What else would you expect to see from this documentary? -Would you say this ...
