Client Research

This project was given by the organisation Sunderland Culture, who aim to unite and engage young people, encouraging them to express their own regional identity. They formed in 2016, in a partnership set up by Sunderland city council. Sunderland Culture wants to unite "Sunderland's most important cultural assets and activities". Through culture, they want to improve the lives of those who live in the Sunderland area. They have the investment of three main founding partners: Sunderland City Council, University of Sunderland and the Music, Arts and Culture trust. Just last year, Sunderland Culture was awarded nearly £350,000 as part of the Governments Culture Recovery Fund which helped ensure a sustainable future after the challenges that came along with the Coronavirus pandemic.

Venues hosted by Sunderland Culture include:

-Arts Centre Washington
-The Fire Station
-National Glass Centre
-Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art
-Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

As the exhibition is to be held at the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, I wish to look more into this venue, what its' purpose is and how I can fit my project around this.

Described by the Sunderland Cultures own website, the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens is incredibly suitable for families, due to there being many different things to see and do. It is extremely suitably placed in the "heart of Sunderland". They offer a Special Exhibitions programme, which showcases "local and national collections", becoming accessible to them through links with national museums. What I find incredibly interesting about this venue, is that there are constantly new and different events happening there, which can be found on their website and across their social media's. The Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens seems to keep Sunderland and the arts culture connected, which I find extremely special.

Some of the events they have organised recently have included:

  • "Where we are now" Student exhibition - Students from the University of Sunderland showcase their work that reflects on the Arts Council Collection.
  • Performances from Southpaw - Mixing "real time dance" with iPad viewing to tell an "incredibly thought-provoking" story.
  • Activities to take part in coinciding with World Mental Health day.

Across Sunderland Culture's social media pages (Twitter: 9k followers, Instagram: 2.6k followers) they share current events they are hosting, exhibitions and overall ways that people can keep connected as a community within Sunderland. Posting as regularly as this organisation does can only have positive benefits, including their organisation can keep going as well as permanently implementing a sense of togetherness for local creatives. Having a consistent and knowledgable social media team means that people of all ages have easy access to events happening in their area and their audience will never be too niche.
